Notes on Shelving and Shelf-Reading

Objectives of shelving
Shelving is very important for efficient management of a library and is therefore d unitary not only quotidian but on a continuous basis.

?To ensure that rule books are returned to their assigned places when they are not needed.
?To provide easy admission price to information sources. A book misplaced is a book lost. Careless shelving obstructs dissemination of information.
?To identify materials that need repair.

Arrangement of materials in UNZA library
UNZA Library uses the Library of Congress Classification Scheme (LC) to manoeuvre knowledge. Books are arranged on the shelves according to LC tours. The grade tendency is labeled on the spine of a book. An outline of the LC is condition below. The main subjects of the scheme are separate into 21 earn of the alphabet. I, O, W, X and Y are not currently cosmos used.

to each one main class has major subdivisions that normally use twain letters e.g. N-Fine Arts has the following major subdivisions:-

N-optical Arts (General)
NA-Architecture
NB-Sculpture

Each one of these subdivisions is hike subdivided into more specific subdivisions are assigned numbers from 1-999. However, not every number is used. Some numbers are divided decimally.

LC class numbers consist of two elements: a class number and a book number. A single letter indicates the main class e.g P for Literature. A double indicates a subclass, e.g PS represents American Literature. In some classes only one letter is used, e.g. Z which represents Library Sciences and Bibliography.
