Domestic Violence in America

According to University of Maryland g all overnmental scientist Ted Gurr, the present level of military group is just the latest of a number of historical peaks in American history (Gest, 1994, p. 26). Surges in violence have occurred at about 50-year intervals--1850, 1900, 1960--and ethnic passage of arms has been identified as having been a significant factor in each of those three periods.

After finish off, robbery and assault reached get in levels in 1980, for instance, rates in almost forevery grade (of crime) dropped for half a decade. Then, fueled by the crack cocain epidemic, ruby-red crime climbed back up. A new murder record was set in 1992, even though the heart and soul number of youths--the cohort most associated with crime--was dropping. The shrinking of the teen creation did seem, however, to reduce the number of property crimes (Gest, 1994, pp. 26-27).

Although the actual number of murders has fluctuated over the past ten years, the number of random murders has not declined. Relatives or acquaintances of the victims have always been most likely to have affiliated murders, but the proportion of murders connected by strangers to the victims may at once be as high as one troika (Gest, 1994, p. 27). Carnegie Mellon University criminologist Alfred Blumstein attributes the "large growth in crimes committed (to) young commonwealth who appear not to have absorbed much interrelate about th

And a large-scale research project recently begun by the federal political sympathies will try to determine ways to "short-circuit" violent behavior. In Minerbrook's (1994) words:

Although the rate of violence involving members of the same fellowship has declined since 1970, it has held fairly constant over the past 2 decades. entirely the difference between urban and suburban rates is hammy: 43.2 incidents per 1,000 urban households in 1992, compared to 28.2 incidents per 1,000 suburban households (U.S. News, 1994, p. 30). In sheer numbers, the number is staggering: at least 800,000 violent crimes are committed in our homes each year. Unfortunately, only the most sensational cases ever come to the attention of the public.

The Bobbitt incident in Virginia, in which rear end Bobbitt's wife, Lorena, slashed his penis, prompted several national media figures to speculate that if Mrs. Bobbitt had simply killed her husband, sooner of only cutting off his penis, the news may never have left Virginia.

The British Isles were rocked in February 1993, when two ten-year-old Liverpool youths abducted and murder a two-year-old boy. Luring the child away from his mother at a shopping mall, the two youths, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, beat the child to death with bricks and a 22 pound metal bar, stripped him, and left his trunk on a railroad track, where it was sliced in two by a passing train (Jenish, 1993, p. 32). The "baby killers" and "monsters"--as the British tabloid press referred to them (Fotheringham, 1993, p. 64)--offered no reasons for their actions to police or in court, and their motive remains a mystery.
