Sometimes some people experience a rough childhood, and are haunted by the infelicitous feelings for eternity. When they see a chance to help someone else so they dont have to feel the alike, they take it. They beseech that someone would have helped them when they where just a young broken child. In the short circuit story A Fortune, the cashier is one of the persons, who will take the chance to help (here: Jeremy), when he can.
The narrator is living in poor social conditions; he was already pickpocketing when he was only 5 years old. As the narrator mentioned it in the text, was it at this age his father told him how aristocratical it was for a child to do pickpocketing. The setting of the short story finds place in a trailer park, in the narrators home and at a slant market. Already from the first time the narrator saw Jeremy he could relate to him, because he said in the text, …from the moment I saw him I felt that there was something familiar near him… Why does the narrator follow them around?
