Essays come in many
forms with different purposes. Argumentative essays are used to solve
certain shortcomings in the society. Topics are generated daily by
the issues that befall us in the society. Scholars and writer have
taken the liberty to solve these problems by writing argumentative
essays that are then presented to relevant bodies to take into
consideration. However when writing these essays the rules of
writing should remain constant more so the argumentative essay and topic should
be able to stand on their own without more elaboration from the
writer as sometimes the writer is not required to avail themselves in
person to present and give stand to the essay for instance an
argumentative essay for college admission.
In this case the
applicant must not avail themselves to the admissions body but should
be bold and elaborate enough in the essay to woo the favor the
admissions panel. Argumentative essays should be well researched to
give a good coherence between what is written in it and what the
topic says. The topic itself should be able to stand alone, that is
arouse the questions and thoughts that the paper ought to address.
The essay and the topic should reveal clearly the authors stand and
point of view over what is being discussed. Caution should be taken
to make sure the topic doesn’t contradict the arguments of the
writer. What stand out in these types of essays is that the opinions
of the writer should be backed by facts and strong proof. Many
writers and students for that matter fail at choosing a good topic.
The topic by itself
should be which the writer feels he/she can easily win the argument.
The claim of the essay which also plays as the basis of the topic
should be well researched and one that is debatable. When the topic
is a good one then generating the arguments and points becomes easy.
The topic should not revolve around personal interests and opinions
as that would mean the assertion is one which is not debatable. The
argumentative essay and topic should clearly have two sides, of which
both sides should be debatable. The essay and the topic should make
appeals to the reader. These appeals may be to reason, emotion or
character. To reason, the writer should try to make the arguments
citing facts and statistics. The main idea is to try to relay to the
readers using the writer’s sense of reason. Sometimes there are
some things in the argument that would make the reader emotional in a
way that would make the reader feel the writer’s argument. As these
topics are claims, the writer must reveal to the reader that they are
trustworthy and reliable. The only way to make the readers believe in
the argument is to make them understand, of course through the
writing. The most effective essays would use these appeals to woo the
readers more into believing the claim.
