My name is Arnold Potts. Today I am here to talk about my experience as the commander of the 21st Brigade in Kokoda during the Second being War. Firstly I feel honored and would to like to convey you for inviting me.
I clearly remember the circumstances for the Kokoda battle. It was after the fall of Singapore, the Nipponese plan was to take Port Moresby and the Solomon Islands. The Japanese wanted to capture important airfields near Port Moresby. This would drive it easer to strike Northern Australia. The Japanese started 200 kilometers from Port Moresby at Buna with 7000 troops after being beaten in The fighting Of The Coral Sea and also The Battle Of Mid appearance. This was the only way to take Port Moresby over Owen Stanly Ranges. Australian troops from the 39thbattalion were move to protect the airfields at Port Moresby. Most were raw juvenility troops who learnt to fire their guns on ships. They were unable to hold binding the Japanese. In these early day invasion seemed inevitable.
My brigade and I arrived on 23 August 1942, after returning from the Syrian Desert. The conditions at Kokoda were different with very steep cumulations which troops dog-tired hours on end climbing up through the round the bend bush with the huge tropical trees, orchids, palms, and ferns.



On mountaintops you could see valleys filed with thickest haze over Ive seen. You went down into deepest valley. Pushing your way through with a 20kg backpack on your back and holding a utensil gun in your hand. You always face difficulties crossing the degenerate flowing rivers and streams. You were trying to balance everything as you crawled along tree logs, which were slippery.
Our Mission was re-take the village of Kokoda and to reinforce the 39th Battalion at Isurava. I was amazed at the conditions of the troops, their faces had no expression and they were deadened by near starvation but they kept on firing against the powerful enemy.
